C2C Pocket Shawl

At the beginning of the pocket shawl trend, a friend of mine showed me a post of someone’s beautiful version. I was intrigued by it but didn’t have much experience making shawls. After making a few other shawls, I decided to try my hand at a pocket shawl. I don’t know why but having found around 8 balls of Vanna’s Choice in my stash inspired me to create a c2c shawl.

As I made this I almost quit because it looked too plain. It was all purple and I felt like it need a beautiful stitch. Well, I was very wrong. This c2c shawl is like a fantastic blanket. There aren’t any holes so there won’t be any cool air hitting you and it is so comfy that you will want to wear it all the time.

Now that I have discussed my design process, let’s talk about the yarn. As I mentioned, I used Vanna’s Choice, but it has become harder to find in stores. So let’s talk alternatives. I used a much bigger hook than this yarn called for. As a result, I wouldn’t recommend just any worsted weight yarn. You should use an average worsted weight yarn or one on the thicker side. You can try a thinner 4 weight if you would like, but some of the thicker 4 weight yarns will will still work very nicely with a bigger size hook; without making holes.

Now that we have discussed yarn, let’s get to the pattern.

Size

Shawl: 18” X 72” (This is the length I made it but yours can vary,)

Materials

         Vanna’s Choice or another worsted weight yarn

         M/N 9.0 mm hook

         Needle

         Scissors

         Measuring tape

Gauge

         6 blocks by 6 blocks =4”

Abbreviations

         Dc – double crochet

St(s) – stitch(es)

         Ch – chain

Sl st – slip stitch

Notes

• When completing c2c some people find it works up better if the ch up is chs long and 3.  The pattern is written with a ch3.  Do one less ch each time if you would like to do a ch 2.

Let’s Get Started!   

 Shawl

Increase

1. Ch 6, dc in 4^th ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs (1 blocks)
2. Ch 6, dc in 4^th ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs, sl st to top of ch 3 from cprevious block, ch 3, dc 3 times on the ch 3 from previous row (2 blocks)
3. Ch 6, dc in 4^th ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs, (sl st to top of ch 3 from previous block, ch 3, dc 3 times on the ch 3 from previous row) repeat until you reach the end of the row (3 blocks)

4 – 24. Repeat row 3 until you have 24 blocks

25. ch 1, sl st on top of each dc of last block made in the previous row, ch 3, dc 3 times on ch 3 from previous row, ((sl st to top of ch 3 from previous block, ch 3, dc 3 times on the ch 3 from previous row) repeat until you reach the last square (24 blocks)

26. Ch 6, dc in 4^th ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs, (sl st to top of ch 3 from previous block, ch 3, dc 3 times on the ch 3 from previous row) repeat, sl st to last block

Repeat rows 25 – 26 until it measure it is the length you want.

To measure, it start at your highest block on the diagonal and measure along that side to the first block you made.

Decrease

1. ch 1, sl st on top of each dc of last block made in the previous row, ch 3, dc 3 times on ch 3 from previous row, ((sl st to top of ch 3 from previous block, ch 3, dc 3 times on the ch 3 from previous row) repeat until you reach the last square, sl st last square
2. repeat previous row until there is one block left, then sl st to dcs of last block.  Fasten off and Weave in your ends.

Pocket

         Start the pocket the same way as the shawl but stop at 14 blocks.  Once you complete 14 blocks, move on to the decrease section.  The pocket should have 14 blocks on all sides.  Fasten off leaving a long enough to sew 3 sides of pocket on.

Sewing Pocket on

         Place pocket two rows up from the bottom and with five blocks on either side.  Sew the three sides of the pocket to the shawl.
