Color Strip Blanket

I would like to share with you my favorite blanket I have made for my family. Not only is the patterning and color beautiful, but the feel of the yarn I used is amazing. I sit with it around me most nights even when I am not cold because it is made from one of those soft and squishy yarns.

For this blanket, I used Premier’s Bloom yarn. I purchased this yarn because I saw other people playing with it unsure of how to really get the most out of the floral patterning in their crochet. I got five colors and played with them trying sc, hdc, and dc and experimented with different widths. From everything I saw, it just couldn’t be worked up as a blanket and still get the same effect with the floral patterning.

Eventually I tried the moss stitch and boy did that work. I got a more even texture without the slight holes and bumps you get from the rows, with sc, hdc, or dc. By making small strips, you can see the floral effect. Also, these colors together in the strips like this makes it absolutely beautiful.

Now although I made this using Premier’s Bloom yarn, it can really be made with any dk yarn. I recommend at getting at least 4 different colors for the strips, but it would work up just as well with 2 or 8 colors. Then you will need an accent color for the borders.

Now that we have covered the yarn, let’s get to the pattern. I hope you enjoy it and have as much fun making it as I did designing it.

Size

40” X 60”

Materials

         4 skeins Premier Bloom yarn or another dk yarn in 4 colors (at least 656 yards per color)

         Premier Bamboo Joy or another dk yarn in an accent color (around 650 yards)

         I (5.5 mm) hook

         Needle

Gauge

         4” = 11(ch1, sc) X 22 rows

Abbreviations

         sc – single crochet

         hdc – halfdouble crochet

         St(s) – stitch(es)

         Ch – chain

Sl st – slip stitch

Notes

• The moss stitch is very stretchy.  Make sure you lay out the strips the same way when measuring them or keep track of how many rows you do in your first strip to make sure they are all close in size.  If your strips are off by just a few rows from each other, that can easily fixed when putting the border on.
• If you would like to make the blanket wider, increase the starting chain by 2.  If you do this, you will need more yarn than the pattern calls for.

Let’s Get Started!   

 Color Strips (Make 8, 2 strips in each of the four colors)

         Ch 38

1. Sk 1, sc in 4^th ch from hook, (sk1 ch, ch 1, sc in next ch) repeat across until the end of the ch (18 ch 1 sp and 18 sc)
2. Turn, ch 2, sc in last ch1 sp from previous row, (ch 1, sc in next ch 1 space from previous row) repeat across (18 ch 1 sp, 18 sc)
3. Repeat row 2 until it measures 40” or your desired height

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Outlining Color Strips

         (Complete this step on all color strips)

1. Sl st into side of color strip, ch 1, sc, sc evenly down the sides and 3 sc in each corner until you reach where you started, sl st to 1^st st
2. Ch 2, hdc in each sc in all sides and place 3 hdc in the corners of the strip.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Lay the strips out together in the order you would like them to be in.  Sew the strips by placing the long sides together.

Border

1. Sl st to any hdc, ch 2, hdc on all sides placing 3 hdc in corner sts, sl st to 1^st st
2. Ch 2, hdc around on all sides placing 3 hdc in corner sts, sl st to 1^st st

Fasten off and weave in ends.
