Hag Stitch Mittens

These mittens are a great project for anyone who has one random skein sitting around that you don’t know what to do with. It is also the perfect way to use up scraps. These fun mittens also have a great texture.

Materials 

 1 Worsted Weight yarn

4.0 mm G hook

Needle

Scissors

Gauge 

10 hdc sts x 7 rows = 2” 

Abbreviations 

sc – single crochet 

hdc – half double crochet 

dec – decrease 

sp – space 

st(s) – stitch(es) 

ch – chain 

sl st – slip stitch

mc – magic circle

flo – front loop only 

Notes 

  • •Look for spots during the pattern where you need to check your size to make sure it fits the size you need it to be.
  • •In the beginning, there will be several stitches where you inc in a stitch but one of those stitches will be places in the FLO and the second st will be places in the 3rd loop of same stitch.

Let’s Get Started!

  1.    Using a magic circle, ch 2, hdc 10 times, sl st to 1st st (10 sts)
  2. Ch 2, hdc in FLO of 1st st, hdc in 3rd loop of 1st st, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of same st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (20 sts)
  3. Ch 2, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of same st, hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st, hdc in FLO of same st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (30 sts)
  4. Ch 2, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st, hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st, hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of same st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (36 sts)

5 – 17. Ch 2, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (36 sts)

At this point, try the mitten on to make sure it covers your 4 fingers and stops at the bottom of your thumb.  If it doesn’t, continue making row 5 repeat until it does.

18. Ch 2, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) x2, ch 8, sk 4 sts, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st 32 sts + 8 chs)

19. Ch 2, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) x2, hdc in 8 chs, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) repeat to end, sl st to 1st st (40 sts)

20 – 21. Ch 2, (hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (40 sts)

22. Ch 2, [(hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) x4, hdc dec using the FLO of the next st and 3rd loop of the next st] repeat around, sl st to 1st st (36 sts)

23. Ch 2, [(hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st)x3, hdc in FLO of next st, hdc dec using BLO of next st and FLO of next st, (hdc in 3rd loop of next st, hdc in FLO of next st)x3, hdc in 3rd loop of next st, hdc dec using FLO of next st and 3rd loop of next st)] x2, sl st to 1st st (32 sts)

24. Ch 2, [(hdc in FLO of next st, hdc in 3rd loop of next st) x3, hdc dec using the FLO of the next st and 3rd loop of the next st] repeat around, sl st to 1st st (28 sts)

Do not fasten off.  You will continue onto the cuff at this point.  

Cuff

  1. For folded cuff ch 21 or for unfolded cuff ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across, sc across chs, sl st to end st from body of mitten, sl st to next st on body of mitten (20 sts or 10 sts)
  2. Sk 2 sl sts, sc in BLO across row (20 sts or 10 sts)
  3. Ch 1, turn, sc in BLO across row, sl st to next 2 sts on body of mitten (20 sts or 10 sts)
  4. Sk 2 sl sts, sc in BLO across row (20 sts or 10 sts)

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have made a sc row for every sts on the body of the mitten.

For folded cuff with the mitten facing right side out, sl st 1st row of sc sts to BLO of final row of sc sts.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

For unfolded cuff with mitten facing inside out, sl st 1st row of sc sts to BLO of final row of sc sts.  Fasten off and weave in ends.
