Crayon Stocking

This new stocking pattern is my 5th and favorite teacher themed stocking I have designed. It is a crayon. It is the perfect gift for any teacher or something you can use to store stuff in. It would make a great plastic bag holder or even store small light objects.

To make this, you will need any worsted weight yarn. All you need is two shades of the same color and black. One shade for the crayon part and another for the wrapper. If you would like to make a few of them for a family you could make several in primary colors or make them in pastel. The color choices are up to you.

Notes

  • The crayon part of the stocking will be worked without turning to give it a smoother look.  This will be the rows 1-15 and rows 57-59.
  • The wrapper will be worked by turning after each row.  This will keep the design on the wrapper straight and give it a slightly bumpy look.  This will be rows 16-56.
  • When picking colors, it will look best if you pick two shades of your color that are not similar.  If you choose a yarn that is only slighter lighter or darker than your main color, it will be hard to see the difference between the wrapper and the crayon.
  • The instructions are written for the darker color to be the crayon and lighter as the wrapper.  If you would like it to be the other way, use the lighter one when it says color 1 and the darker 1 when it says color 2.
  • If switching the colors, make sure your wrapper color isn’t too dark or the black decorations won’t stand out.
  • I did a ch 2 for my dc sts so it did not create a whole.  If you have loose or long stitches, you may want to do a ch 3 instead.
  • In row 13, you will place two fpdc around the same stitch.
  • When making the black ovals, you will need to make 2 black bobbins.  For  color 2, you can either carry it behind the black yarn, or you can create 3 bobbins and make each color section a separate bobbin.

Let’s Get Started!

Crayon Pillow

  • If you would like to turn this into a pillow, make the circle bottom piece and sew it to the top of the crayon.
  • I would also recommend going down to a smaller hook.  I recommend a G 4mm hook.

Circle bottom for a pillow version

  1. Using color 1 and make a magic ring , ch 2, hdc in circle 8 times, sl st to 1st st (8 hdc)
  2. Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around, sl st to 1st st (16 hdc)
  3. Ch 2, (hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around, sl st (24 hdc)
  4. Ch 2, (hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (32 hdc)
  5. Ch 2, (hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (40 hdc)
  6. Ch 2, (hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around, sl st to 1st st (48 hdc)

Fasten off leaving a long enough tail to sew the circle to the end of the crayon. Stuff crayon. Sew circle to the bottom of the crayon.
