Twisted Mini Bean Hat

twist, headband, head, band, mini bean, back loop only, single, crochet, hat, style, chain, pom, winter, cold, hook, knit, measure, measurement, warm, circumference, height, adult, child, toddler, baby, any, size

There is just something about those twisted knot headbands that makes me absolutely love them. They are simple to make yet look more complicated. Plus, it is an added bonus that you can add some style and warmth with something that fits in your pocket.

After making several twisted ear warmers, I realized I could do more things with twist. So I decided to start by turning it into a hat.

            6.5 mm/k hook

            Needle

            Scissors

            Mini Bean – 8 mini beans x 14 rows = 4”

Success! You're on the list.

Brim

            Ch 13

  1. Sc in second ch from the hook, sc across, ch1, turn (12 sts)
  2. Sc in blo (12 sts)

Continue sc in blo until the piece measures two inches less than the head circumference.  Use the link above to find the age appropriate head circumference.  Once the brim is the length you need it, cut the yarn leaving a long enough tail to sew the two pieces together.

Place the brim on the wrong side.  Fold the two ends in half (figure 1) and place the folds into each other (figure 2 and 3).  At the end it should like figure 4.

Sew them together.  When finished, weave in end and cut tail.  Turn the brim inside out so it looks like it has a knot.

Top Section

For this part, I sc 78 stitches evenly around the brim.  I, however crochet tightly so you could have less stitches.  You will just need the stitches to be a multiple of two.

Lay the twisted brim flat.

Now turn it over so the twisted section is laying on the surface you are working on.  You will attach your yarn in the center of the back of the brim so your chain ups will line up with the twisted brim but in the back.

Sl st to the back of the twisted bring and ch 1.  Sc evenly around brim until you reach the last blo bumps before the twisted knot begins.  Sc once between last two blo ridges before the center of the twist (figure 7).

Now make sure the twist is laying as flat as you can and make a sc in the center at the fold so you go through both the left and right edges together.  This will keep your twist laying flat and minimize any visible wholes that could form around the twist section.

Place 1 sc in next section between the two bumps from the blo rows.

Continue making sc stitches evenly across the rest of the brim.

Sl st to the first sc of the row, ch1

  1. Sk 1st sc, mini bean in next, (sk st, mini bean), repeat across, sl st to first st, ch 1, turn
  2. Mini bean in side of mini bean from the previous row, continue placing mini beans in the side of the mini bean below, sl st in first mini bean of the row, ch1, turn

Continue creating rows of mini beans until the hat length measures 1.5 inches less than the finished hat height (check the link in the notes to find your hat height)

You will now begin to decrease. (You may not be able to decrease evenly to the end and that is okay.  Just finish the row).

  • (mini bean in first 4 mini beans, mini bean decrease) repeat across, sl st to beginning st, ch 1 turn
  • (mini bean in first 3 mini beans, mini bean decrease) repeat across, sl st to beginning st, ch 1 turn
  • (mini bean in first 2 mini beans, mini bean decrease) repeat across, sl st to beginning st, ch 1 turn
  • (mini bean in first 1 mini beans, mini bean decrease) repeat across, sl st to beginning st, ch 1 turn
  • mini bean decrease, repeat across, sl st to beginning st, ch 1 turn
  • sc dec around, sl st to first st, fasten off (if you want to attach a pompom, leave a long tail)
