This pattern is one I love because it can be used in so many different ways.  It also can also be used to exhaust your little one. I actually took my kiddos to a party and they were antsy.  I grabbed this out of my car and they had a catch with it. Then when they got bored of that we rolled the dice and they had to do an exercise or run back and forth the amount of times they rolled. Another day we pulled out a board game and the dice was missing, so we used these Number Blocks.

There are two different dice I designed.  One goes from 1-6 and the other is 7-12. I made two so their use can be expanded to older children as well. Here are some activities you can do with these Number Blocks. If you like these activities, subscribe to my email list to be one of the first to know about new posts.

Success! You're on the list.

Activities

  • Roll the dice twice and add or subtract those numbers.
  • Roll the dice twice and multiply or divide those numbers.  This would such a great way to help your kiddo practice their multiplication facts.  You could throw it in between problems to help them learn in a more relaxed environment.
  • Practice identifying numbers
  • Roll the dice a few times and use those number to practice placing a comma in a number or learn decimal places
  • Roll a number and count that many crayons or count another object
  • Use the number block instead of any dice that come with board games
  • Have a catch
  • Roll the number block and do an exercise that many times

Okay! Now that you have plenty of activities to do with your kiddos, lets get to the pattern.

Number Block Pattern

Materials

Any worst weighted yarn in two colors

            5.0mm (H)

            Needle

Stuffing

Gauge

            16 sts & 20 rows = 4”

Notes

  • The only stitch used is single crochet.  After the first line, I stopped writing sc but it is used for the entire pattern.
  • The numbers on the top and bottom of a dice usually add up to 7.  I did this for the first number block.  On the second number block, the two numbers should add up to 18.  There is a diagram below with how it should be laid out.
  • Every row of every square will have 15 stitches across.  Each block will have 17 rows.
  • After number 1 and 2, I did not write ch 1 and turn.  It will only state the number of stitches for each color.  You will still need to ch 1 and turn.  All the blocks will start the same as block number 1 and 2.  You will ch 17 in color A and sc in the second chain from the hook and sc across.
  • You can use dk or bulky weight yarn instead but it will result in a smaller or bigger number block.

After completing blocks 1-6 or 7-12, it is time to sew everything together.  There is no need to weave ends in.  They can all be hidden inside the block.  I put my blocks together just like a dice is.  The number on the top and bottom should equal the same on all sides, so the 1-6 block will equal 7 and the 7-12 will equal 19.  Here is a layout of how everything should be attached:

When sewing all the blocks together, leave one side unsewn.  Stuff the block.  Then sew up the final side.  That’s it.  You are all done and ready to play!
